Families, please join us for cultural night next week on Feb 12th! Grade 1 and 2 have been working so hard on their research of Nunavut as we explore the unique community of Iqaluit in Social Studies. Today, we finished our Nunavut flag and we're all so happy with the outcome! Grade 2s, is it a square? Remember your checklist as we continue to explore 2D shapes in math: - 4 sides - 4 vertices - square corners - straight lines - closed lines Grade 1s, can you find 1 more? Remember, the number that comes next is one more! Try it out
1 more than 3 is _____ ? 1 more than 7 is _____ ? 1 more than 8 is _____ ? 1 more than 1 is _____ ?

Families, the last day to buy candy grams for Valentine's is tomorrow at lunch. One is 25 cents or 5 for $1! Students explored describing the setting (where and when of a story) of a book today by being introduced to our Valentine's Book Study: Love Monster! Feeling alone in the World of Cutesville, Love Monster leaves to go to the Big Wide World and find the love he's looking for! After searching and finding nothing, Love Monster boards a bus back to Cutesville, only to find love when he least expected it! This beautiful story showed us the importance of loving someone for what's on the inside. Our Love Monster book study will extend into next week, on February 12th, I encourage students to bring their valentine's for their friends as we will be creating special carry away bags. Grade 1 students are working on describing numbers as more and less! Using a ten frame, grade ones can explain how many more or less a number is than 5 and 10. Here's some practice: Grade 2 students extended their knowledge of sides (the lines in between vertices) and vertices (corners) today. Have your student practice with the below shapes:
Families, please remember that Candy Grams are on sale all this week at lunch. One for 25 cents or 5 for $1. Grade Ones are continuing their exploration of more/less today. Students used a ten frame to compare a number more than 5! Students can draw a ten frame or print a copy of one for extra practice: Once their 10 frame is ready, students can work to answer the below questions: Now that Grade 2s have explored straight/curved and open/closed lines, we've moved on to identifying the other parts of shapes: sides and vertices. Vertices are the corners of a shape and side is the line in between each corner. If you have one corner, you have a vertex. But, if you have more than one, we saw vertices for plural. Students can draw shapes (being sure to have closed lines) and count the total number of sides and vertices in their shape or they can count the sides and vertices of the shapes below for extra practice: Students continued their phonics work on the digraph "ch" today, too. Remember, each dot represents a new sound, blend all the sounds together to say the word!
Room 9 kicked off the month with phonics work! Today students reviewed the digraph "ch" as in "chin" or "chop" or "chip". We will be working on this sound throughout the week, be sure to review it at home as well. Ask you student what words they know that start with "ch", extra challenge if they can identify words with "ch" endings or middles. In math, grade 1s worked on finding more or less by comparing numbers within a five frame. We know that if a five frame is full and some counters sit outside the frame, we have more than five. But, if the five frame has some empty squares we have less than 5! Here's a five frame example, you can practice at home with finding more or less by comparing numbers to five. Grade 2s continued their exploration of 2D shapes by comparing closed and open lines. An open line has two distinct points on either end, where closed lines loop continuously. We learned that in order for a shape to exist, it's lines must be closed! Students can practice with the below, identifying if it's closed or open: We were also invited to our Grade 6 Buddies' Planetarium today! Our Buddies educated us on the planets and we had so much taking photos in their rocket ship, too! As we prepare for Cultural Night on February 12, Grade 1/2 continues to explore Iqaluit and the Inuit people who live there. We are discussing how cultures are unique and what makes them that way so that we can share facts and stories with our families when they visit our booth. Today, we explored the Nunavut flag. We discussed our a provincial/territory flag helps unite the people who live in that area. Additionally, the Nunavut flag is filled with special meaning! I don't want to give away any spoilers, so ask your student to describe the flag and it's various meanings! We started constructing a large flag today, and it's looking amazing! Grade 1/2 also read the book "An Inuksuk Means Welcome" by Mary Wallace and were able to learn a few Inuktitut words!
