Families, please be reminded that there is no school tomorrow, Friday November 1st.
We had such a fun and spooky day at Rosscarrock! After music, students moved into math centres. Grade 1s are learning to count objects in different arrangements, not always a straight number line from 1-10. We are continuously practicing that the last number we say while counting is how many objects we have. Grade 2 continued with their addition practice, introducing new tools to help them solve addition sentences. Today, we used a 100s chart to help solve addition sentences to 20. Afterwards, we introduced story telling! All stories have a beginning, a middle, and an end. Today, we talked about how in the beginning of a story we are introduced to the characters of the story! We discussed new characters as we watched some spooky Halloween short movies! Students enjoyed a healthy snack and got in the spirit of Halloween as a community, it was great! In the afternoon, Rosscarrock had a Halloween parade. Students travelled to every class to enjoy all the costumes and the pumpkins. In room 9, we ended our day with Zombie dodgeball! See below for the pumpkins of Room 9 !

Families, as tomorrow is Halloween, please feel free to send your child to school in costume. Please note however we are not providing time during the school day to get into costumes.
Families, important information regarding an upcoming field trip Thursday November 7th is in your student's backpack. Please ensure you review and complete the required form and return to the school no later than November 6th. Any student who does not have a completed form cannot attend this field trip. Grade one students continued their practice using a chart to help with their counting of objects. This is helping students say numbers in sequence and write the corresponding numerals. Grade twos focused on their numbers all the way to 20. We talked about how we say teen numbers with their beginning digit first. Additionally, we focused on 13 and 15 as we do not say "three" or "five" teen, but instead thirteen and fifteen. Students then used this knowledge to count concrete objects. During Science, students learned all about the word 'transparent'. We experienced see through items by wearing Mrs. Berg's glasses and looking through our rainbow glasses too. Then, students made their own transparent pumpkins with some Skittles and warm water! Our afternoon was spent painting our pumpkins with our Grade 6 buddies. Students explored how paint sticks to different surfaces other than paper AND learned that transparent paint is not thick enough to cover the orange of the pumpkin! Stay tuned tomorrow for a picture of our completed pumpkins, they look amazing!! Families, important information regarding an upcoming field trip Thursday November 7th is in your student's backpack. Please ensure you review and complete the required form and return to the school no later than November 6th. Any student who does not have a completed form cannot attend this field trip.
Students worked on their number recognition this morning as we practiced sorting numbers in order. With the help of a Hundreds chart, students are able to sort numbers from smallest to largest. Ask your student to sort these numbers in order: 10, 6, 13, 2, 3. We introduced some new blends in literacy today, too! A blend is when two or more consonants BLEND together, but each sound can still be heard. Today, as we continued with our book study of 'Room on the Broom', students worked with Br and Fr blends. We explored our room for words that start with either of these blends like: Bright, Friend, Friday, Franklin, Brenda, Broom, Frog, Froze, and Fry. Ask your student what sounds these blends make and what words they know that begin with Br and Fr! In art, students planned out their personal pumpkin decoration. Tomorrow, our grade 6 buddies are joining us to help decorate a pumpkin. Students are going to be decorating pumpkins of all shapes and sizes to look like unicorns, scary monsters, dogs, cats, rainbows, and more! Families, tomorrow is going to be a messy art day, so be sure your child is wearing clothes that are ok to get a bit dirty! Pumpkins are for the students to keep, so we will be sending these home on October 31st. In gym, we are working on our soccer skills. We are learning how to pass to a partner, stop the ball with our foot, and make a controlled movement. Students are able to position their bodies to aim in the right direction and they apply appropriate force to pass the ball smoothly too! If any students are hoping to join our Wednesday book club, please ensure that permission forms are returned to school. Book club begins Wednesday November 6th. What a spooky day in Room 9! Students began their day with the exploration of the letter Ll. We practiced first with saying the sound out loud, then we practiced writing the letter, and finally we moved on to our letter Ll books were students worked on their Ll vocabulary. Families, watch for the letter Ll books in your student's backpack and ensure you practice reading this at home, too! In math, students experimented with our class pumpkins and measurement. Students were able to collect data in groups and, together, we determined which of our class pumpkins was the tallest and which was the widest. Students had so much fun with this hands on math experiment! The data we collected is pictured below. Today also begins our book study of "Room on the Broom" by Julia Donaldson. This is not only a very festive book but also highlights kindness and bravery! To get started, students learned some new vocabulary words so that while reading, we could all properly interpret what was happening in this action packed book. Ask you student some of the new words they learned today! Families, feel free the watch the book with your student on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWB0goTWZic In science, we continued our exploration of colour! Students learned all about the rainbow today and are able to list the colours of the rainbow using the acronym: ROYGBIV. Students were able to explore the room with rainbow glasses and see the world as if they were a rainbow! We had some much fun trying to change the colours of classroom objects depending on what coloured lens we were using. We also read the book "Mix it Up" by Herve Tullet! Finally, posted below is s a great opportunity for our kids to see a hockey game and experience some Canadian culture! Tickets are free for students and only $12 for parents. Parents register online - see the flyer attached! Families, don't forget that there is no school on Friday, November 1st. Also, with the weather getting worse, please ensure all students have proper footwear and jackets!
Today, students in Room 9 learned all about their primary colours: Red, Yellow, and Blue! Then, we recreated art by Pieter Mondrian (see the final picture: Composition II in Red, Blue, and Yellow from 1930). Students loved creating their own versions of these compositions. We also read the book Vincent Paints His House, which makes reference to the famous painting A Starry Night. Talking about art and seeing it in our books and our projects shows students that they have the ability to create beautiful work, just like famous artists!
Students in grade 1 continued their practice on writing their numerals today. Just like our letters, we must ensure we are writing our numerals correctly. And, this is another skill that comes with practice! Grade 2s worked further on their subtraction skills and have been testing each other with flash cards. Numbers up to 20 have now been introduced to the subtraction work that grade 2s are doing and they are enjoying the extra challenge! Students also worked on their sentence parts today. In small groups, we reviewed the stories we completed yesterday continued to identify the subject, or noun, in these sentences. Students all know that a noun is a person, place, or a thing. Once again, practice with sentence writing will only enhance our confidence and fluency. Families, tomorrow is our short day this week but please ensure students have a healthy snack. Additionally, if your student wants a new home reading book for the weekend please have their home reading folder in their backpack and I will exchange in. School photo order deadline is Monday October 28th! What a whirlwind of a day!
Room 9 explored further with natural and manufactured objects today as we sorted our natural objects by colour. Students are able to describe the difference between natural and manufactured and they are able to sort items, too! We had fun discussing why some objects were sorted into certain colour groups. In math, grade 1s worked on writing numerals. Today, we focused on tracing our numbers and students are working on identifying when numerals are written correctly and incorrectly. Many students require practice with the numeral 2, so practicing at home would be a big help! Grade 2s explored the impact of adding the numeral 0 to their addition and subtracting sentences. Students know that when you start with 8 and add none, you end up with 8. They also know that when you have 3 circles and take away 0 circles, you end up with 3 circles. Grade 2s also understand that when we have 8 and take away 8, we end up with zero. In fact, whenever we take away the same number we start with, we always end up with zero! In Language Arts, students continued their study of sentences. All complete sentences require a subject and an action - today, we focused on the subject. Students learned all about nouns which can be a person, a place, or a thing! Students then completed sentences with nouns to write their own short story. Ask your student for examples of nouns tonight! Hello Families,
please check your child's communication folder for a notice regarding book club! Please sign and return this form if you want your child to participate in this weekly club to enhance their reading compression, fluency, and vocabulary! Also, don't forget picture order forms are due October 28! As for today, we had another busy one in room 9! Students started their morning with music and library. Afterwards, we practiced mindfulness to get us ready to learn. Students participate in guided breathing and stretching activities to practice self-control, enhance focus, and manage stress. Following mindfulness, we moved on to math centers. Today, Grade 1 students worked on their recognition of the numbers 0-10. Students are using their knowledge of representing numbers to show 0-10 as a tally or symbol. They are also practicing their subitizing skills as they look at objects and know how many there are without having to point and count. Grade 2s worked on their understanding of subtraction. They are able to describe this math operation as "taking away" and can draw pictures and use other objects to solve these equations. In literacy, we worked on a new word family! Students are able to describe word families as any words ending in the same set of letters/sound. Today, we learned all about the "ad" family. Students are able to decipher the two letters "a" and "d" using their knowledge of letter sounds and can implement this to spell words with the same ending. The photo below is another example of blending letter sounds to decode new words. Each dot is a new sound, and as students run their finger under the word, they say the new sounds out loud and blend them together to say the word. Practice these words at home as repeating words enhances fluency! We also built on our knowledge of sentence structure today. Describing a sentence can seem difficult, because as adults we use them so often. But, Grade 1 and 2 students don't often know what a sentence is. Today, we discussed how sentences are a group of words that are complete in itself. We looked at some examples, and students decided if they were sentences or not. For example: 1. Dog. 2. I ran to the park. 3. Cat is. 4. My dad is fun. Examples 1 and 3 are not complete! Talk to your student about sentences tonight! Students got right to work after a relaxing weekend. We started our morning off with our exploration of the letter Kk. This is a tricky letter, because it makes the same sound as Cc! However, Room 9 knows that difficult things make our brains grow and we kept trying to brainstorm words that start with the letter Kk. Families, watch for their letter Kk books in their backpacks and be sure to practice these at home too!
Grade 2s continued with their addition practice today. Today we introduced beaded number lines to help us complete our addition sentences. Remember 2+2=4 is the same as starting with 2 and adding 2 more is the same number as 4. Students are able to work on addition sentences that are both vertical and horizontal. Grade 1s worked on their number recognition for 0-7 and learned about counting out. Counting out is a strategy that's used when we have a large number of objects, but we only need a few. So, students remove only what they need from their large pile, without having the count the whole amount. We also reviewed rights and responsibilities and talked about community helpers. These are people that have special roles (or responsibilities) in our community. Students brainstormed helpers such has police officers, principals, and grocery story clerks. Students picked a helper that they were able to design, and then they completed the sentence "I help my community by..." one example read "I help my community by keeping people safe". Finally, in gym we worked on our cooperative games and introduced parachute games. Students LOVED using the parachute, ask your child all about it! Grade 1 and 2 spent the morning on a scientific exploration of natural and manufactured objects. Students learned these definitions and then investigated objects in the classroom and outside to determine if they were natural or manufactured. Students can determine that some objects are manufactured using natural objects. Like the classroom pillows, for example. These are made by people using cotton, which occurs in nature. Students used their knowledge of letter sounds to try to spell these objects on their own, too! Discuss with your student at home the difference between manufactured and natural objects!
Afterwards, we met with our grade six buddies to learn new math games for math centres! Grade 1s were taught Kaboom by their buddies. In Kaboom, we use our number recognition to represent numbers in various ways. Grade 2s learned Uno which not only enhances number recognition skills but also comparing number skills, too. Families, school photo order packages have now been sent home. School photo order deadline is October 28! Have a great weekend! Room 9 was a busy place on our 30th day of school.
Grade 1 and 2 students were treated to a musical performance from their grade 6 buddies this morning! It was fun to watch our buddies use boom whackers to create songs. Afterwards, we moved into our math centres. Grade 1s were introduced to zero (0). In math, zero means none. Grade 1s have now worked on the numbers 0-5 and are able to represent these numbers in a variety of different ways. Grade 2s reviewed addition today. Grade 2s know how to say 2 + 2 = 4 and that this math sentence not only says "two plus two equals four", but also "starting with 2 and adding two more is the same number as four". Math centres also include various math games, like power of ten memory which uses subitizing skills to win the game. Students also continued using their knowledge of letter sounds to blend letters together and build words. During literacy centres, students also focused on the sight words. They were able to play sight word games as well as complete worksheets that required students to write a sight word several times, use it in a sentence, and trace its outline (remembering is shape allows us to remember which letters are in the word). Families, students are coming home with their school photo order forms, please be sure to review these documents. Please also remember to look for information in student communication folder daily. Communication folders should remain in student backpacks. |
