We had an amazing day in Room 9! Students participated in the Terry Fox Run, with some grade 1/2 students running up to four laps around our school! As a group, we raised almost $50 for cancer research and your children should be so PROUD.

Tomorrow is Rosscarrock's Terry Fox Run! Please ensure students are dressed in comfortable running shoes and warm clothing. Parents are welcome to join for our assembly beginning at 11:45, and stay for the run following. Thank-you for your support!
Reminder: Orange Shirt Day is held annually on September 30. This day campaigns to keep the discussion going around all aspects of residential schools. It is an opportunity to remember and honour residential school survivors, and those whose lives ended too soon. We encourage you to take the opportunity as a school to reflect on history, legacy and implications, discuss stories of survival and strength, and share ways we can work together toward reconciliation. If your child has an orange shirt, we invite them to wear this on Monday Sept 30th, 2019. Students are showing great success with their new literacy centres! During these centres, students are able to work on letter recognition, letter sounds, blending words, creating sentences, and spelling in a levelled, structured way. This allows students to do work they feel comfortable with which enhances their literacy confidence. Ask your student to show teach you some of the math games we've been practicing in class. You don't require all of the same materials we use, some paper, pencils, loose coins, and some blocks would work! For example, 1-2-Nim is a game that promotes mathematical strategy, with goal being to obtain the last of the objects in a pile. Students have to count and plan ahead as each turn they are only allowed to grab 1 or 2 of the objects at the time (no more than 2, no less than 1). The number of objects in the grab pile is not set, so you never know how many turns you'll get! Students are learning so much in Mrs. B's music class. As students drum away to some classic rock tunes, they are learning all about rhythm. Perhaps your child will want to show of their musical skills at home! Friday is Rosscarrock's Terry Fox Run! Please ensure students are dressed in comfortable running shoes and warm clothing. Parents are welcome to join for our assembly beginning at 11:45, and stay for the run following. Thank-you for your support!
Students are really getting the hang of their math centre rotation. At this rate, we will be starting our regular math program by next week! Room 9 has enhanced so many math skills these last few days: mathematical strategy, counting on, number recognition. We saw a lot of mathematical confidence in the room today! Students were also introduced to their literacy centres today. Grade 2s were busy building sentences and creating words with "at", "an", "it", and "in" endings. Grade 1s worked on building word puzzles, alphabet sorting, letter building, and letter sounds. As a whole group, we worked to create stories based only on pictures. This concept is new for a lot of students, and the fear of "being wrong" can hold a lot of us back. Make sure you're talking at home and encouraging your child to do hard things. Trying hard things is how we build new pathways in our brains! Parents, make sure all students are practicing their yellow word list at home. Knowing these words will only enhance your child's literacy confidence! Finally, it's Orange Shirt Day on Monday September 30th. Students are encouraged to wear an orange shirt (if they have one!) to commemorate the residential school experience, to witness and honour the healing journey of the survivors and their families, and to commit to the ongoing process of reconciliation.
Parent Reminder: Please leave communication folder inside your child's backpack.
Library overdue notices were sent home with students today, please check your child's bag to see if they have any overdue library books! Students were sent home with their Gg books for practice. These books are for your child to keep at home, and their goal is to read their book to 3-5 people. Most students were able to read their Gg book to one friend today. Please be sure to practice this book with your student! Students should also be able to list several words that start with the letter Gg! We brainstormed a lot of words as a class, ask you child what words they know that start with Gg! Please also remember to be practicing the Yellow Sight Words with your student. Sight words help us read and write, but we all need to practice them! Students worked further on their math strategy, number recognition, counting on, and subtilizing skills in math centres today. Ask your student what their favourite math centre is and what skill they are working on when they are at that centre! We are also introducing technology into our literacy work. Students got to practice on the SmartBoard as we played Teach Your Monster to Read! This is fun, free, online program that helps students with letter sounds and sight words. The link for this resource is included below.

Happy Monday! Another busy day in Room 9. Students worked very hard today and we continue to practice, and model for our peers, expected classroom behaviour. Students began their work on the letter Gg, please have your student review their letter sounds with you. They should be able to say the sounds for: Aa, Bb, Cc, Dd, Ee, Ff, and now, Gg! Students should also be able to identify that Aa and Ee are both vowels and have two sounds (short and long). Practicing these sounds at home only further supports your students to read and write as they learn new words. Room 9 was filled with scientists today as we collected data about our favourite colours. We used this data to make a graph, showing that red is the most popular colour in our room! See an example of our work below! Math centres today explored mathematical strategy, number recognition, subitizing, and counting on skills. Students are enhancing their skills through math games and practicing how to rotate through centres efficiently. Parents, remember that Tuesdays are our library day! So, if your student has any library books at home, please bring them back if they've finished reading them. Our Home Reading and Rainbow Word program officially starts today! Please be sure to practice reading both your students' book but also their yellow sight words! The first sight word testing will be on October 5th. Remember: there is no school tomorrow, September 20th!!
Today, students finished off their letter Ff practice. Each student has their letter Ff book to read at home to 3-5 people. We also worked on sorting objects and being able to explain our sorting rule. Determining attributes of different objects is an important mathematical skill! In science, we are continuing our color exploration!! Cooperative is our focus in gym, and our students are learning dodgeball. We are practicing being honest with this game too, as it requires significant self assessment. I look forward to seeing you all at Meet the Teacher!! We worked really hard on behavior in Room 9 today! Students are doing a fantastic job meeting classroom expectations and treating themselves, others, and our school with RESPECT.
We're learning all about our brains and making sure we keep ourselves healthy so that we can learn. Doing difficult things on repeat allows us to make new pathways, so that difficult things start to get easier. Students are learning that their brains need healthy food, physical activity, lots of sleep, and even some laughter in order to grow! We are working on our letter Ff: it's sounds, how to write it, and words that start with Ff. We are also practicing our number recognition, today we worked together to correct a number line! Room 9 is continuing with our exploration of letter sounds, and today was our final day spent on the letter Ee. Grade 1 & 2 learned about long Ee sounds and how, when beside another vowel, E says its name. For example: Eagle vs. Egg - two distinct sounds, but both Ee words! Students brought home another My Letter Ee book for practice, they are required to read this book to 3-5 people. Grade 2s wrote their beginning of the year MIPI (Math Intervention/Programming Instrument). We use this tool to determine our strengths and highlighting what mathematical concepts need more practice. Parents, we can talk about these more at Meet the Teacher on September 19 & 20th. Please ensure you are booking a time for Meet the Teacher, these are important meetings so that parents & teacher can set goals for students! If you need assistance, please select see the document attached!
Hello Families!
Students are still practicing their letter Ee sounds. We are now using Our Letter Books to bring home and read to our families. Students are required to read these short books to 3-5 people. Please take some time to read with your student!
We are also learning about Terry Fox and his legacy. With our schools Terry Fox run approaching (September 27th), we have begun our class fundraising. Please check your child's backpack for letter outlining our fundraising goal. Students have been practicing their number recognition and subitizing skills through math games. Today we played Ten Frame Memory - see some photos below! Tomorrow is a half day, with school being over at 1:00 pm. Be sure to still pack your student a healthy snack, even though we do not get a full lunch hour. Room 9 has seen a large amount of candy, please limit the candy packed in lunches. Remember that Meet the Teacher is next week, a sign up sheet will be distrubted soon! We do have school all day on September 19th (Thursday), but no school on September 20th (Friday). |
