Swimming has been so much fun! Families, please continue packing swimsuits, towels, and a FULL change of dry clothes for both tomorrow and Thursday.
Students are working hard on their Northern Lights Art project and I hope to post some finished products soon. They will also be on display for our Nunavut booth at Cultural Night February 12. Be sure to keep that night free in your calendar. Students are also working on the "sh" digraph this week. We have brainstormed words and create silly sentences to help us remember this interesting sound. Have students make an "sh" word web this week so that they continue to practice at home! Please remember to pack your students' swimsuit and towel EVERY DAY this week (no school on Friday), as we swim every morning! Extra snacks are encouraged as students are working hard and were very tired after their first day in the pool. Students have loved the pool so far!
Because of our swimming time, we will be going to the library on Wednesday this week, please remind you student of this. In the afternoon, we read Painted Skies by Carolyn Mallory. Students were introduced to the unique connection the Inuit people of Nunavut have with the Northern Lights and we began our artistic creations for our Cultural Night display! Families, if you would like to participate in Cultural Night, please complete the yellow form sent home with students last week OR contact me directly. Families, please remember that swimming week starts on Monday, January 27. Please ensure your student comes to school with swimwear and a towel. Also, they need a FULL change of clothes. Socks, underwear, pants - everything!
Please also watch for your students reflection journals and provide them feedback. Journals are due back every Monday. Rosscarrock School sweatshirt order forms have been sent home today! Please return your order form as soon as possible. Sweatshirts are $35 each.
Room 9 focused on kindness today. Using the Circle of Courage, we wrote "I Can" statements, relating our actions to kindness and ensuring that we keep our, and our friend's, circles full! Our Circle of Courage bulletin board is now complete, and you are welcome to come see it. Grade 1s learned a new counting strategy today that allows them to compare numbers to 5 to find our if they are more or less than five. You can practice this at home too! Try holding up 7 fingers, count how many you have in total. We know 7 HAS to be more than five, because we have one hand with 5 fingers up already. Grade twos started their unit 5 on 2D shapes today! We are starting with breaking shapes down into parts, and identify if a shape is made up of straight or curved lines. Students have landed in Iqaluit! Using the above link, we touched down in Iqaluit this afternoon! We explored the city using Google Earth's street view and made notes of how Iqaluit's geography differs from our own. Students then used a real compass to go as far Northeast as our school ground would allow, getting us a little bit closer to this arctic town! We reviewed finding less as a whole class today using our large number line. Students know that the closer you are to zero on the number, the smaller your number is and when we find less, we are finding smaller numbers! Here's some additional practice in finding less: Grade twos worked more on finding the distance around an object today, using an addition sentence to represent the total of all sides of their objects. This is a helpful strategy specifically when we work with non-rectangular shapes, as their sides become uneven! With grid paper, students can work on the below:
After reviewing how to find our way using a compass, students embarked on their journey to Iqaluit! Each student was given a boarding pass, together we loaded the plane, and watched the below video showing a pre-flight, take off, and landing of a plane! Students determined that Iqaluit is Northeast of Calgary and tomorrow we're explore how the geography is different based on it's location! Students had so much fun with their make believe trip, ask them about it tonight! Students are working more closely with the diagraph "th" today. "T" and "H" do not say their usual sounds when paired together, making it an interesting combination to learn about. Practice brainstorm "th" words with your student tonight! In math, grade 2s practiced further on measuring the distance around an object. Students were introduced to measuring non-rectangular shapes like triangles and creating addition sentences to find the total distance. Students can practice measuring distance with pretty much any object or hand drawn shape: Grade 1s practiced finding less. Students learned that less is simply the opposite of more! When we find more, we want to find a bigger number. When we find less, we want to find a small number. Students can practice finding less using a hand drawn number at home!

Please also see information below regarding a free info session on screen time for children For grade ones, math was about reinforcing the concept of more before we moved on the the concept of less tomorrow. Students worked in pairs to find how many more today. Using a number line, students can practice at home too. Ask them to find: - 2 more than 5 - 3 more than 4 - 3 more than 7 - 1 more than 8 or any other combination to test their knowledge! Grade 2s worked on finding the distance around an object today. Students practiced counting the sides of an object in order to measure (give a number to) the distance around it. Like the below: This student's distance was 12. Students can even make an addition sentence to show the above: 4 + 2 + 4 + 2 = 12. Have your student practice with the below: Students also worked on finding their way in Social Studies today. As we prepare for (a make believe) trip to Iqaluit, we wanted to ensure that we won't get lost! Students learned all about the compass rose today. We used our directions for find answers to clues about Canadian landmarks. Students also built their final house for our Three Little Pigs books study in science. Students were able to use a fastener to create paper houses with three criteria: a wall, a roof, and a door. Students were finally able to create a 3D house, showing us that the fastener was vital in creating a proper object!
Families, please watch for your student's reflection journal. These go home every weekend so that students can receive written feedback on their personal writing from home. Please see the note inside your student's journal for how to give feedback on their writing!
Please be sure to return reflection journals on Monday! Have a great weekend!! Grade 2 students worked on measuring the distance travelled today. To understand this, we looked at the game of baseball. We wanted to measure the distance between first and third bases; however, we cannot measure this as a straight line like the below: Instead, we have to measure first to second base PLUS second to third base. Without that, we skip a base and break the rules on the game. Look at the below picture with your student, how far does the ant travel to get to school? Grade 1s continued their work on "how many more" today. Look at the below grid (we use a grid because it makes pairs for us): How many circles are there? (3) How many squares are there? (4) How many more squares than circles are there? (1). Therefore: Students should work on finding more, and can do so with the below questions (requires them to draw shapes) OR by using objects found around the house: crackers, socks, toys, lego - anything that gets them physically finding more!! Practicing awareness that numbers get larger while we count in order helps students remember that if a number comes later than another, it's larger (ie. 3 is never more than 5!). In science, we looked at WHY some of our houses were so difficult to build the last time we explored with our materials. Today, students were given extra materials (fasteners) and directed to re-attempt building their stick houses using any of the materials provided. Students got really creative with their limited supplies of toothpicks, tape, and string in order to build a house that had walls and roof (extra challenge if they could build a door). Afterwards, we discussed the difference from last class and students realized that their ability to create something 3D that actually stayed together was entirely dependent on fasteners.
