Hi Families!
Going forward, all lessons and announcements will only be posted to our new Google Classroom. It is important that every student log on to the classroom (usernames & passwords have been sent to all families) to keep in touch and to participate in distance learning. You would have received an information package with a "how-to" guide to get started, below are some pictures to guide you as well. Thank you!

Dear Rosscarrock Families,
If you’re like me, your head has been swirling with emotion these past four days, and for good reason. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought our year to a screeching “PAUSE”-a pause with no clear end in sight. Special things, which we’ve been anticipating (Camp, Lacrosse, Bike Month, etc) have been canceled. When I walk around the empty classrooms and hallways, I am sad, but I am also filled with happiness. The experiences we’ve shared at Rosscarrock have molded us into an inseparable group. And I thank you for creating that for all of us. There’s nothing I, or anyone, can say to make up for that time you are losing in what is supposed to be one of the most playful years of your life. But I can offer some encouragement. Right now, you have the power to make the most out of this unfortunate situation. If over a decade of teaching has taught me anything, it’s that people your age are resilient and innovative. Your generation can navigate multiple worlds and bounce between physical and digital spaces with ease. You are part of the most racially and ethnically diverse generation, and you embrace those differences in ways adults seem to struggle. I can also offer some advice. Help one another and your family. They need you. Do your grandparents or your elderly neighbors need groceries? Offer support. Some teachers may even need your help as many try to transition to online learning. We need you. Go for a walk by the school and read all the messages teachers and staff have posted for you. We want to see your faces from the other side of the window reading them. Keep your head up and keep fighting. Our country needs you because you provide hope for our future. This year may not be what you envisioned, but I’m eager to see what you do with it. Love, Mrs. Fraser Dear Grade 1/2,
Room 9 is not the same without you in it. I miss your laughter and your hugs. Most of all, I miss your curiosity and desire to learn. We are working really hard to find the best ways to keep you learning while we can't meet at school, but for now I want you to focus on keeping yourselves safe. Keep your bodies and brains active and healthy. Remember to read and to eat healthy snacks. Play games and ask questions. Please contact me if you have any questions: [email protected] . I hope to see you all soon. Love, Mrs. Berg
Yesterday, the government announced that all classes are cancelled immediately and indefinitely due to COVID-19. We thank the government for listening to school boards and parents to support the health and safety of students, staff and families.
Please do not send your students to school Monday, March 16, 2020 and until further notice. Before and after school programs are also cancelled. Staff will be available at each school to ensure that, if students show up, parents will be contacted and expected to pick up their child immediately. More information will be sent to you in the coming days with details on when to pick up personal belongings, return library books, etc. Schools will create a pick up schedule which will be communicated to parents. Please note that yellow school buses and other specialized transportation will not be running tomorrow. Alberta Education has stated that every K-12 student will receive a final mark and students will progress to their next grade level next year. Provincial assessments, such as provincial achievement tests, will be cancelled. At this time, diploma exams essential for post-secondary acceptance will continue. Every student who is eligible to graduate from Grade 12 this year will graduate. We will continue to work with Alberta Education on these details. In the coming days, the CBE will be providing more information and supports for online learning, as appropriate. The government has also indicated that teachers and other staff are expected to work, either from their school or workplace. Spring break will continue as scheduled. During spring break, school buildings will be closed and school-based staff will not be working during this time. We know you have many questions. We will continue to update you as more details are confirmed. Thank you for your patience and support. Christopher Usih Chief Superintendent We had a great day making shamrock sun catchers with our Grade 6 buddies today! Our room is looking very bright and cheerful (we're ready for spring!!) Families, please watch for reflection journals coming home today. Please provide feedback on your students writing on the orange slip provided on today's entry!
Reminder that Student Led Conferences have been postponed. Dear Parents,
Based on the changing provincial and local response to COVID-19, the CBE has given us direction to postpone our Parent Teacher Conferences (Student-led Open House) scheduled for March 18 & 19, 2020. If your child’s teacher has scheduled an appointment on Thursday March 19, 2020, your child’s teacher will call you at your appointment time, please make sure you are available at that time. All CBE schools have been given direction to postpone or cancel events that include populations from other schools and/or parents or other community members, such as Parent-Teacher Interviews, celebrations of learning, drama/musical performances, dances, athletic competitions, etc. This decision is effective from Mar. 12 until the end of March break. This decision will be revisited during March break to determine whether events should be rescheduled. Events outside of school hours that include the regular student and staff population of the school (school clubs, practices, etc) and scheduled field trips may continue at this time. I know this may be disappointing news. Students and staff have spent a significant amount of time preparing for this event, but the health of our community is our priority. For the most up to date information about the CBE’s approach to COVID-19 and the actions we are taking, please visit our website. Answers to frequently asked questions will continue to be posted as information becomes available. Thank you, Brenna Fraser Grade One students reviewed ordinal numbers today (first, second third....4th, 5th, 6th, etc). This is a great skill that reinforces the order of numbers! Here's some more practice: Grade two students practiced identifying the sorting rules for groups today. With some review of our pattern attributes, students were able to DESCRIBE what is the same about groups aka: the sorting rule. Here are some examples for practice:
Dear Parents and Guardians, Student-Led Conferences are coming soon! The purpose of these conferences is to provide your child the opportunity to share their accomplishments and celebrate all they have learned this year. Please note, we have made some changes to this year’s conference schedule: · On Wednesday, March 18, all students along with their families are invited to come to Rosscarrock School any time between 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm. Plan on being here with your child for about 30 minutes. · There is no need for you to sign up for a conference time. Your child will lead you through a series of activities and displays that showcase their learning. If your child’s teacher feels there is a need to formally meet to discuss you child’s learning, they will contact you to schedule a meeting time. These meetings will take place on Thursday, March 19, between 8:00 am to 12:30 pm. You do not need to sign up as the teacher will contact you directly. The Scholastic Book Fair will be taking place in the Library on both of these dates. You are invited to please visit with your child to shop for books. We look forward to seeing everyone on Wednesday evening, March 18, for a night of celebrating our learning! As for today, Tuesday March 10th --> we kicked off our day with more in line skating! Kids are LOVING this gym time and are learning how to control their bodies. We can't wait to skate again tomorrow. We practiced "bubbles" today and students are doing so well. Students also practiced the scientific process today. As we begin our Temperature unit we are going to be participating in even more experiments and we want to make sure we completed those experiments like real scientists. Students learned that an experiment is just a test. In order to complete an experiment properly, students follow the below steps: Students practiced the scientific process in a simple experiment using hot and cold water to answer the question: Can our senses be fooled by temperature? We found out that yes, when our hands are sensitized to a certain temperature, introducing the opposite temperature to than hand will result in us not feeling the temperature properly! In math, grade ones continued counting strategies by reviewing numbers that come before and after as well as exploring numbers that are found in between two others. Students can practice their number sense with the below: Grade twos have started their next unit in Sorting and Graphing. We study this unit so that we are able to display and compare data. Students are working on sorting data into groups based on rules. See how students can practice this skill at home:
