Three Pillars of Care
Our school uses the Three Pillars of Care to help students and staff communicate our shared expectations. These pillars are referred to daily, both within our classes and we proudly recognize students who are outstanding role models. Care for Self · Be on time for school. · Be organized and return notices promptly. · Be accountable for your actions. · Be clean and tidy in your dress and with your belongings. · Be prepared for learning by listening and following directions. · Be responsible and use appropriate language in school, on the playground and on field trips. Care for Others · Be kind and courteous to classmates, staff and visitors to our school. · Be aware and tell an adult when you see someone who is hurt either in their body or in their feelings. · Be responsible for making sure that others feel safe and welcome at our school. Care for Place · Be respectful of public property, community and personal property. · Be thoughtful about your litter and place it in the garbage cans by the school doors. · Be responsible for keeping your work, eating areas and playground tidy. · Be careful to remove wet and dirty footwear to help keep our school clean and dry. · Be environmentally aware by reducing daily waste and bringing lunches and snacks in recyclable containers.

Grade 1 and 2 had another busy day in room 9!
After music, students moved into their math centres. Grade 1s focused on writing the numbers 1-4 in a variety of different ways: tally marks, symbols, pictures, etc. In doing so, they are working directly on their number recognition. Grade 2s learned to read the words zero to ten. All grade 2 students can look at the numerical symbols 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 and say the corresponding number. Paired with their knowledge of letter sounds, grade 2s are able to match numerical symbols to number words. For example, when we say 5 we know that it starts with an F and has a V sound as well so we can match 5 to five. Students began their exploration of the letter Jj today too. Families, watch for their Letter Jj book to practice reading at home. Students know that Jj is a consonant and has one sound. We brainstormed many Jj words: jellyfish, jungle, jet and we practice writing the letter Jj too. Practice the Jj sound with your child! Mrs. Fraser's Student Voice group has implemented a kindness project for Rosscarrock. Students are able to report acts of kindness to the office so that those may be added to the ever growing kindness chain. As a class, we read the book "Extra Yarn" and talked about what it means to be kind, what kindness can look like, and what kinds can feel like. Families, please continue to practice your child's rainbow words at home as well as sending your child's home reading back to school at least once a week! Thank you for your support with these programs! Hello Families! What a great day after a long weekend! Today was action packed as we had our first lockdown practice. Room 9 did very well during the drill. Families, please remind students of expected behaviours during lockdowns, real or practice. Students should remain calm, quiet, and patient. Students in room 9 should be able to explain the lockdown process to families, too! All students had the opportunity to complete any pages not done in their Jump Math book today. Grade 2s practiced using the terms more, most, fewer and less while being able to determine how much more one quantity is over another. Counting extras and counting on are two strategies grade 2s can use to find these answers. Grade 1s continued with their number recognition today and are able to show numbers in a variety of ways: dots, ten frames, tally, symbol, pictures, and words. Word families were introduced to students today as well! Today, all students practiced with the 'ab' family which includes were like: cab, tab, lab, and dab. Students used their knowledge of letter sounds to blend and read these new words. Families, try practicing blending sounds at home. Practicing 'ab' family words would be beneficial for any student mixing up Bb and Dd sounds! See the photo below, every new dot under the letters means a new sound! Another reminder to families to please make sure that communication folders REMAIN in student backpacks. An orange letter regarding Parent Council was sent home today. Many students had to put this letter lost in their backpack as they did not have their communication folder with them today. Sight word testing was completed today. Please make sure we are practicing the Rainbow Words at home EVERY DAY. I hope all students complete the yellow words by next week! Families, don't forget there is no school tomorrow October 11 or on Monday October 14th.
After Grade 2s learned the mathematical terms more, most, less, and fewer they were able to use that knowledge to find out how much more one quantity is. Grade 2s are able to count extras to find out how much more one quantity is and they are able to count on to find out how much more on quantity is. For example, if you want to know how many more 8 is than 5, count from 1 to 5 with your fist closed, and then raise your thumb to say "6", your index finger and say "7", and raise your middle finger and say "8". Because we raised three fingers when counting to 8 after cautioning to 5, we can see that 8 is 3 more than 5. Students can also just say 5 with their fist closed, then start raising fingers as they progress passed 5. This saves a bit more time and is called counting on. Grade 1s became pros with numbers 1, 2, and 3 today. They are able to identify numbers in many forms: tally, symbol, and dots! Families, be sure we practicing forming numbers at home too, this will help students remember the shapes and directions when writing numbers. We continued our exploration of the letter Ii today too! Because Ii is a vowel, it has two sounds: long ( as in island) and short (as in igloo). Students are brining home their book of long Ii sounds today. Many students chose to practice reading their books with friends, but extra practice at home always helps so be sure we are reading this books with students! Students began working on their first unit in Social Studies today, too! We began our discussion of communities by talking about rights and responsibilities. Rights are what we can depend on to live a full and happy life. Responsibilities are jobs we must do to help in our groups and communities. See you all next week! Students have been working so well during math centres! They understand the rotation system and have been gaining confidence with being able to work independently. Students are able to identify which math skill they are working on at each centre. Today, grade ones worked on sorting objects and identifying their sorting rule. Students in grade 1 have now completed their first unit in Jump Math! Today, grade 2s learned about more, most, and fewer. In math, more means the bigger number, most means the biggest out of a group, and fewer is used for objects that we can count.
We had a special guest in our room today teaching students about whole body listening! Ask your child how we listen with our full body (Brain, ears , eyes, mouths, hearts, hands, and feet) ! We hope to use our whole body listening skills throughout the school year so that every student has the ability to their best in class. Handball was a lot of fun today, too. Students worked in larger teams now that we have practiced the rules and there was a lot of cooperation in gym class today! Tomorrow is our last day of school this week! Families, please be sure to be practicing your students home reading and rainbow sight words! The next sight word testing will be on Tuesday October 15th. We had another very busy day in room 9!
During math centres, grade 1s continued practicing sorting objects into groups. Specifically, we focused on circles and what makes a circle, a circle! Students talked about curved lines and that even if a circle has something in the middle (like a clock), it still makes a circular shape with its curved line. Grade 2s worked on representing numbers with one-to-one correspondence. If students started off with 3 yellow blocks and 4 green blocks and then added one more block to each group, we remained with more green blocks than yellow. Adding blocks didn't change that! We could double check this by counting. Students were then able to compare pairs of objects and determine which objects had more. Today, we also combined science with art. Students combined colours into two different categories: warm and cold. Ask your student what colours are warm (red, yellow, orange) and which are cold (blue, green, purple). Then, students had to colour a fall leaf using only colours in the same category. The results are stunning, and I am so excited to display their work in the classroom. Students used chalk pastels for this work, and it got a little messy but we all had a lot of fun! Literacy involved focusing on sight words. Students practiced writing the 20 words from the yellow word list you have seen in their home reading folder. Write the room adds more fun to writing than simply copying words down. 20 words are hidden throughout the classroom, students have to find all 20, copy them down, and then practice saying the words out loud with a friend. Families, please make sure we continue practicing sight words at home. Your child will bring home a new list every time they master 20 words. Families, don't forget we do not have school on October 11 or 14th. Please also make sure that communication folders remain in student backpacks. Please check these folders daily for important information, like the noon supervision form (see previous post below). Families, please remember that a long weekend is approaching for students. There is no school on Friday, October 11th or Monday, October 14th.
Today was picture day! All students' pictures were taken and more information about ordering prints will be sent home as received. Because of picture day, our morning was a bit hectic; however, we were still able to introduce Jump Math! Grade 1s worked on sorting different objects into groups. We practiced looking at different objects and deciding that even though they aren't the same, we can still sort them into groups based on different attributes, like color. Grade 1s then had to go to independent work, were they completed the first two pages of their Jump Math workbooks. Grade 2s worked on matching numerals to spoken numbers. We practiced with counting objects, and learning how to keep track of our counting so that we avoided any counting mistakes. We made sure that we knew how to write our numbers too! Then, Grade 2s worked independently with their workbooks. This was the first time independent work was introduced to our math centres and, even though pictures made the morning a little confusing, everyone in Room 9 worked very hard and got their workbook completed for the day! We also introduced the letter Ii today. Students should be able to tell you that Ii makes two sounds, both short and long. Room 9 practice writing their letter Ii and we will continue practicing this vowel for the remainder of the week. Families, we quiz all students on their Rainbow sight words every week. We need to make sure that we are practicing all of these with students EVERY day. Along with home reading, this program will not only increase a student's vocabulary but also their reading confidence. Please also make sure that home reading is returned to school, book included, at least once a week. Every child has a designated exchange day; however, if your child is reading their books quickly I'm happy to exchange as much as they want! As long as they are reading at a pace they are comfortable with and enjoy. Along with the Rainbow Words, please be sure to be practicing home reading with your student. Communication folders must also stay in student backpacks every day. Please check them for any materials that are for return to school (Noon Supervision forms) or stay at home (Letter books to practice with family). This information is for parents of all students who stay at school for lunch.
You can register your child and pay online at My CBE PowerSchool Parent Account. If you registered online, you do not need to complete the Noon Supervision Registration Form that was sent home this week (attached). Noon Supervision Fees § The 4-day lunch program at Rosscarrock School is $27.50/month/child. § This fee covers supervision of students during the lunch hour. § It does not include food. § If paying by cheque, attach to the Noon Supervision Registration Form. § Cash is not accepted. Use of the noon supervision service indicates that the Parent/Guardian accepts the terms and the responsibility to pay the annual fee of $275/child. Unpaid fees shall be referred to collections by the Calgary Board of Education. Our Grade 6 Buddies helped us with an empathy project for Orange Shirt Day today. Because Orange Shirt Day teaches us that Every Child Matters, we focused on answering the question: "What Can I Do or Say to Help Others Know That They Matter?". We created an Every Child Matters tree with our promises to each other - and it looks amazing!!
As a class, we are trying to focus on choosing kindness as much as possible. One skill that helps us with these choices is mindfulness. We practice mindfulness every day, which is an act of being in the moment. Students practice mindfulness every morning by participating in calm breathing, stretching, and self love exercises. Families, please remember that picture day is on Monday, October 7th! Other important/upcoming dates: October 11: No School October 14: No School What an amazing fun day in Room 9!
Students continued their letter Hh exploration. First, we listened to a book called "That's Not a Hippopotamus!" then, in Art, we created hippos with hats and hair! After creating their hippos, students had to name them with a name starting in H. We have a lot of "Happy" hippos in the room now! Students also practiced their subtizing in math centres today, which is a great skill to have as we build our mathematical confidence. Grade 2s are learning how to work together in a larger group, so that their direct instruction can be specifically grade 2 math. Families, please remember to always include your child's communication folder in their backpack. Also, check their home reading to be sure you're practicing their book and exchanging at least once a week! After 5 books, students get to pick a prize. We also completed our first test of our yellow rainbow sight words this week. Many students still need a lot of at home practice in order to memorize these words. Please make sure you are working with your student on their sight words! Important Dates: October 7th: Picture Day October 11: No School October 14: No School |
