Welcome back, grade 1 and 2!
We had another whirlwind day in Room 9. After a busy morning in the music room and then the library, students reviewed letter sounds and then focused on the letter Nn. When pronouncing this letter, the top of the tongue goes to the roof of the mouth. Our lips are not pressed together, that would make the sound of Mm instead! Students practice writing their letter Nn and as a class, we brainstormed words that not only start with the letter Nn, but have Nn in them! This is an amazing progression from the beginning of the year as students are showing they are able to decipher specific letter sounds all throughout words, which will only make them strong spellers and readers. Students have brought their letter Nn books home, be sure to practice reading these with your child as the sentences in this book have great sight words that all students would benefit from memorizing! In math, grade 1s continued exploring the concept of more. This knowledge allows students to identify numbers in correct order, but also identify larger numbers and that these numbers contain all the numbers that come before them. When comparing numbers, the number we say later while counting is more! Students can now find out which number is more through one-to-one correspondence as well as counting. Have grade 1 students compare the below numbers to determine which is more: - 1 and 5 - 6 and 3 - 7 and 2 - 8 and 5 - 1 and 0 Grade 2s practiced writing numbers to twenty. Numerals are our symbols for numbers, but all numbers can be written in word form, too! Grade 2 students know their written numbers from 1-10, today we introduced 11-20. Grade 2s learned some new strategies to help them identify number words and translate them to symbols and vice versa. For example, when we read "teen" that means the 1 goes first. Then, we look at the entire word to find the number words we know and that digit comes second. Nineteen has the number nine in it, for example, so we know nineteen = 19. We can also compare word beginnings. Thirteen is a good example of a teen number that doesn't have a number word within it. We know "teen" means 1 first, then we can look at the beginning of the word. "Th" has the same beginning as three, so therefore thirteen must = 13. The same trick can be applied to twelve and twenty. As two (2) starts with "tw" we know twelve and twenty must also contain 2 as a digit. In literacy, we reviewed what we know about sentences so far. All sentences contain a subject and an action. Subjects = nouns and actions = verbs. Students are able to provide examples of both nouns and verbs and we can find these within sentences too. Sometimes, however, sentences can be very long. Here, we find prepositions. Students learned that this word simply means: connecting words. Prepositions act to connect the people, objects, time and locations of a sentence. A book with great examples of this is Rosie's Walk. Families, you can listen to the story by selecting the button below. As a class, we incorporated physical movement to learn preposition words. We walked under the meter the stick, across the carpet, around the desks, and over the meter stick. We sat in our chairs and put our feet under our desks. We will be using this information to construct our own classroom book all about our zoo visit - watch for this book during Parent Teacher Conferences Nov. 21 and 22!

After reviewing the parts of a sentence (subject and action), students also reviewed what subjects can be. In a sentence, we always have a noun (or, at least, a reference to a noun) and nouns can be a person, a place, or a thing. Today, students moved on to the action part of a complete sentence. Actions are our verbs and, together, grade 1 and 2 brainstormed action words. We came up with words like: talk, hug, learn, eat, dance, write, watch, balance, and play. Afterwards, students were tasked with completing sentences with verbs. These sentences already had their subject. Students worked on finding words for: "I _________ at school" and "The penguin is ___________".
Grade 1 and 2 also took part in our Remembrance Day celebration where we were able to display our class wreath (see previous post). We sang songs of remembrance and showed respect to the grade 4/5 class as they presented on important topics such as Indigenous veterans, signs of respect, and coming together in peace. We ended our day with math games where students tested their subitizing and number recognition skills, counting on, and other math strategies. Students have mastered the math centre rotation making this portion of our day smooth and effective. Plus, we all work as a community to clean up afterwards, with is always rewarding to see. Families, please remember that there is no school on Monday! We'll come back together on Tuesday, November 12th. Grade 1 and 2 had an amazing day at the zoo! We spent our day observing so many creatures. Students saw hippos, meerkats, giraffes, lemurs, lions, zebras, pandas, tigers, monkeys, red pandas, and penguins! We walked through the African Safari, the Rainforest, Euro Asia and the Antarctic to see all of these amazing animals. During our Penguin Palooza class, we learned all about where penguins live, what they eat, what eats them, and how humans can impact penguins. Students were invited to dress up as penguins so that we could learn all about how they stay warm and we learned how penguins find their families in the loud penguin colonies. The zoo is such a great way to start our Needs of Plants and Animals unit in science!
Families, please join us for our Remembrance Day assemble tomorrow at 10:45 am. Families, please remember that our zoo field trip is tomorrow, November 7th! Please ensure your student has appropriate clothing, lunch, and water! Tomorrow is supposed to about 5 degrees, so warmer than this morning but still chilly! We discussed at length in class about appropriate zoo behaviour: no running, staying with the group, no touching of animal cages or plants, and no shouting. Please continue this discussion at home. Our penguin class begins at 11:15 am and is a great segue into our Needs of Plants and Animals unit in science. Students have already learned some interesting facts about penguins and we have prepared some questions we would like answered by the zoo experts. Students are so excited for their first field trip of the year, so please ensure students arrive to school on time as we are leaving at 9:30 am sharp.
Today we also spent some time focusing on Remembrance Day. Room 9 learned all about this important day and the impact the people we are remembering have had on our lives. Families, our Remembrance Day celebration takes place on November 8th at 10:45 am. Please feel free to join us! Room 9 has created a beautiful wreath as a symbol of our thanks for those who fight to keep us all safe. Please see a picture below. Students spent math focusing on important skills like counting on, subtizing, and demonstrating an understanding of subtraction. Grade 2s learned a new math game to help them with their subtraction and Grade 1s played race to 120, Kaboom, and math puzzles. Families, please ensure all zoo forms are returned by tomorrow! It is important that permission forms are signed and returned to the school, otherwise your student will not be able to attend our field trip on Thursday, November 7th. As we prepare for our zoo field trip, class discussions have been focused on appropriate zoo and bus behaviour. Students are expected to be respectful, patient, safe, and attentive. Families, please reinforce this conversations at home.
Please also reminder that book club starts tomorrow! Students who have brought back their permission form meet in the Grade 1/2 room at 12:20 to eat and read stories together! Grade 1s reviewed their knowledge of the concept of more today in math. We remember that more in math means "the bigger number" and, we can find out which group has more objects even without counting. By pairing up objects, we can compare groups using one-to-one correspondence. Students practiced making their own questions for their peers, ask you student to write you a question at home! Grade 2s used tens and ones blocks to practice their addition. If we have a large pile of ones blocks and I am looking for the answer to 10 + 5 =, instead of counting out 10 ones blocks and then 5 more, we can grab one tens block and the only five ones blocks. Together, these six items represent 15! Grade two students are learning various ways to demonstrate their understanding of addition! In science, we began our 'Needs of Plants and Animals' unit in preparation for our zoo field trip. Today, we classified different creatures based on where we can find them: land, water, or air. We also discussed the needs of animals, and how the needs of one animal may differ then those of another. For example, a fish needs water to breathe, but a bear cannot breathe underwater! Rosscarrock's Remembrance Day celebration is taking place on Friday, November 8th at 10:45 am. Families, you are welcome to join! Grade ones and two are learning all about the importance of Remembrance Day and how carrying on this celebration we continue to appreciate the bravery and sacrifice of those who fight for our safety. Families, please ensure zoo permission slips are returned ASAP. We are going to the zoo on Thursday, November 7th. Any students who do not have a signed permission slip will not attend the trip to the zoo!
We got off to a good start today as we reviewed writing and saying the letter Mm. We practice individual letter sounds so that we can read and write words. Students worked on their letter Mm books today, and while most students read this book to their peers practicing at home is still encouraged! In Math, grade ones worked on the concept of 'more' by using one-to-one correspondence. With this, they are able to compare sets without counting. Students who finished their workbook early were challenged with extension questions. Grade twos continued with their addition practice, and using a chart to aide in their addition. Using various tools helps us develop a deeper understanding of addition. Any students who finished their workbook early we able to challenge each other further with addition flash cards. After lunch, we explored what the colours white and black do to our primary colours. With paint, we were able to create new colours and also describe them as 'lighter than' and 'darker than'. Students had a lot of fun using the paint to create different colour shades! Families, Rosscarrock's Remembrance Day celebration is Friday, November 8th and starts at 10:45 am. Please feel free to join us!! |
