Students had another busy day in room 9! Students worked on the letter Ww today and after practicing the letter sound and writing the letter, were able to brainstorm so many Ww words! Test your student tonight to see how many words they can think of that start with Ww or have Ww in them. Be sure to read their Ww books too as there are good vocabulary and sight words in these books that all students need practice with. In math, grade ones worked on numbering patterns so that they can determine if the pattern matches. We practiced together so that students would remember the rule "same shape, same number" before they worked independently. Try the below question to determine if the patterns match: Grade 2s reviewed their pattern attributes today so that we may confidently write pattern rules for more complex patterns. Pattern attributes include: shape, size, colour, direction, and even thickness. Have your student create patterns based on the below rules:
- where only size changes - where only shape changes - where size and shape change - where size and colour change - where colour and direction change In social studies, we continued our discussion around the importance of community. Students reviewed culture and how culture enhances our community. We found out that there are several other languages spoken in our classroom community (at least 6 other languages!) alone! We also spoke about traditions and special talents that community members might have. During these discussions, students are given to opportunity to display respect for diversity and they can appreciate the contributions other people make to their communities. Additionally, students were curious about the word "citizen" from a previous class discussion, so we read the book "What Can A Citizen Do?" by Dave Eggers and Shawn Harris.

Students practiced a new skip counting song today; learning to skip count by 3s to everyone's favourite song: Old Town Road! The lyrics are below, have your student practice this new song at home! Grade ones worked on showing patterns with numbers so that we may determine matching patterns easily. Students know that when they see a pattern of shapes, that they give the same shapes the same numbers. Just as it shows below: Students are now able to determine if two patterns match by numbering them! Because the cores are the same (1 2), these patterns match! Grade 2s worked on pattern rules today and practiced using the word "Repeat" in context of their math work. We know that in order to describe a pattern, we have to stay the rule. We can determine the rule by identifying the pattern core, listing the attributes that change within the core, and adding "repeat" to the end. For example, the rule for the below pattern would be: big, big, small, repeat. We also worked on making a poster of pattern attributes so that we can access this vocabulary any time we need! Students also worked on their letter Vv books. The /v/ sound makes the lip vibrate and we know to "Never end a word with 'v' always add a silent 'e'". Families, be sure to practice your student's Vv book at home!
In social studies, we talked about why belonging to a community is important so that students are able to begin to describe how they are connected to the world around them. Students talked about how the best thing about communities, is the people who live there. That is because people bring their own culture, traditions, and special talents to the community. We focused on culture today and we determined that culture means the special things people in a group do. Students talked about food, language, and art such as music and how these enrich our communities! Our 60th day of school was filled with patterns!
After music (where we continued to practice strumming a C chord on the ukulele) and library, students did a number talk to practice their Skip Counting by singing our 2s song to the melody of "Me!" by Taylor Swift (see the lyrics below). Afterwards, we moved onto jump math. Gr 2's continued their work from yesterday where we are able to identify attributes within a pattern. They were asked to create their own patterns based on attributes given. Have your child create patterns based on the below: - where only the size changes - where only the shape changes - where the colour and size change - where the size and shape change Grade 1 students learned about describing patterns by developing pattern rules. We practiced the vocabulary word "repeat" so that students could use this word in context. We understand that repeat means to happen again. When looking at a pattern and determining the rule, students are required to identify the pattern core which repeats. For example: 121212121212 Pattern rule: 1 2 then repeats or ABBAABBAABBBA Pattern rule: ABBA then repeats After Daily 5 where students are working on digraphs such as: ch, sh, th, and wh we worked on the digraph ck as a whole class. We know that ck says /c/ sound and by adding "I" we focused on the "ick" family such as: lick, kick, sick, wick, and pick! Have your student recite and write these words at home! We also combined patterns with art today! We started our pattern quilt art where students were required to create a two term core that repeats in a quilt. Students had to break their quilt down to work with their desired shape: square, triangle, or rhombus as well. Depiction is a major component of visual learning, and observing the basic shapes within objects is an artistic skill we need to develop. Some examples of work is below! As we enter our last three weeks of school for 2019, Grade 1 and 2 are nearing the end of the alphabet review. Today, we focused on the long sound for letter Uu, when it says it's name. Unlike the Uu in "umbrella", the long sound says the Uu in "unicorn". Students will bring their long sound Uu books home today. Talk to your student if they are meeting the success criteria for these books: as in, do they already have 3 names on the back of their book? Students are expected to read to three friends before putting their work in their backpack. I encourage having this discussion and reading this book at home, the more practice students have with the sight words and letter sounds in these books, the better!
Grade 1 students worked to identify missing terms in between patterns. After identifying the pattern core (the part that is repeated), students are able to use this knowledge to find the missing term (individual part) of a pattern. Try working on the below with your grade 1 student: Find the missing terms 1) ABBABBA_BAB_ABB 2) ABCBABCBA__B 3) _BCABCABCA_C Answers 1) B, B 2) B, C 3) A, B Grade 2s worked on pattern attributes today. A circle and a square are examples of shapes. Big and small are examples of sizes. Red and blue are examples of colours. Up and down are examples of directions. Shape, size, colour and direction are used to describe objects. Properties that describe objects are called attributes. Students can describe what changes about a pattern by identifying the attributes. For example, in the below pattern the shape changes: 131313131313 In daily 5, students continued their digraph practice to use the sounds "ch, sh, wh, and th" to sound out words. Afterwards, we moved on the social studies where we discussed how a person can belong to several communities at once. After some review of community types, students identified the communities they belong to such as: home, neighbourhood, school, classroom, city, team, and country. Then, we looked at our neighbourhood community that we built last class and determined that our neighbourhood is situated inside our larger community: Calgary. Students identified landmarks that are special to Calgary that we could add to our constructed community and got to building them. See below a picture of the Calgary Tower, COP, The Bow, and the Saddledome! |
