Room 9 was a busy place on our 30th day of school.
Grade 1 and 2 students were treated to a musical performance from their grade 6 buddies this morning! It was fun to watch our buddies use boom whackers to create songs. Afterwards, we moved into our math centres. Grade 1s were introduced to zero (0). In math, zero means none. Grade 1s have now worked on the numbers 0-5 and are able to represent these numbers in a variety of different ways. Grade 2s reviewed addition today. Grade 2s know how to say 2 + 2 = 4 and that this math sentence not only says "two plus two equals four", but also "starting with 2 and adding two more is the same number as four". Math centres also include various math games, like power of ten memory which uses subitizing skills to win the game. Students also continued using their knowledge of letter sounds to blend letters together and build words. During literacy centres, students also focused on the sight words. They were able to play sight word games as well as complete worksheets that required students to write a sight word several times, use it in a sentence, and trace its outline (remembering is shape allows us to remember which letters are in the word). Families, students are coming home with their school photo order forms, please be sure to review these documents. Please also remember to look for information in student communication folder daily. Communication folders should remain in student backpacks.
