Students got right to work after a relaxing weekend. We started our morning off with our exploration of the letter Kk. This is a tricky letter, because it makes the same sound as Cc! However, Room 9 knows that difficult things make our brains grow and we kept trying to brainstorm words that start with the letter Kk. Families, watch for their letter Kk books in their backpacks and be sure to practice these at home too!
Grade 2s continued with their addition practice today. Today we introduced beaded number lines to help us complete our addition sentences. Remember 2+2=4 is the same as starting with 2 and adding 2 more is the same number as 4. Students are able to work on addition sentences that are both vertical and horizontal. Grade 1s worked on their number recognition for 0-7 and learned about counting out. Counting out is a strategy that's used when we have a large number of objects, but we only need a few. So, students remove only what they need from their large pile, without having the count the whole amount. We also reviewed rights and responsibilities and talked about community helpers. These are people that have special roles (or responsibilities) in our community. Students brainstormed helpers such has police officers, principals, and grocery story clerks. Students picked a helper that they were able to design, and then they completed the sentence "I help my community by..." one example read "I help my community by keeping people safe". Finally, in gym we worked on our cooperative games and introduced parachute games. Students LOVED using the parachute, ask your child all about it!
